Thermal imaging survey in Warsaw – what did we see in the capital?

The capital of Poland, Warsaw is a city in the Mazowieckie Voivodeship. Here, too, many business owners have decided to set up photovoltaics, with the aim of lowering their electricity bills. However, statistics show that the vast majority of company installations do not exceed 50 kWp. However, for personal, often production needs, it is completely sufficient.

However, it is important to take proper care of the power plant. This is both to carry out regular servicing, cleaning of the modules and at least once a year to carry out a thermal imaging survey.

The order we received came from the concerned owner of a 3-year-old photovoltaic installation located on the roof of an industrial hall. Previously at this customer we performed service and panel cleaning. Analysis of recorded inverter data indicated a year-on-year decline in production. Therefore, the decision was made to perform thermal imaging.

Thermal imaging survey – shows what you can’t see

We performed the measurements in accordance with the following guidelines and the PN-EN 62446-1 standard

  • Measurement at appropriate solar irradiance
(At least 400 W/m2 and preferably more than 600 W/m2).
  • Observation angle within a safe range (between 5° and 60°).
  • Stable solar radiation over time.

At around 1:30 pm, with the temperature at 23 degrees, we began the drone raid. The pilot planted the drone on the ground after a roughly 30-minute flight and taking 180 double photos.

The installation under study consisted of Sunport 450W modules.

Thermal imaging survey in Warsaw – what did we see in the capital? – CONCLUSION:

Location: mazowieckie province, Warsaw

PV data: A solar power plant with a capacity of about 50 kWp consisting of Sunport photovoltaic modules.

Results:

  1. 12 Hot Spot damage, or locally overheated modules. Consequently, they can lead to permanent damage to the panels.
  2. 1 damage caused by bird droppings.
  3. 11 damage caused by prolonged soiling, that is, solar panels cleaning must be done!
