Europe’s oldest photovoltaic installation

The oldest photovoltaic installation in Europe – Ticino Solare 10

  • Do you know where the oldest photovoltaic installation in Europe is located?
  • When was it launched?
  • What kind of power does it have?
  • How many photovoltaic panels make up this installation?
  • Who built it?

Solar energy is one of the cleanest as well as renewable energy sources. Photovoltaics have been booming in recent years, so photovoltaic installations are springing up all over the world. But did you know that the oldest photovoltaic farm in Europe is located in Switzerland and is still operating today?

Ticino Solare 10 – The oldest photovoltaic installation in Europe

The Ticino Solare 10 photovoltaic plant was built in Lugano, which is in Switzerland. Its construction was completed in 1982 and it is the first solar plant in Europe to be connected to the public electricity grid.

The installation consists of 288 photovoltaic panels with a total capacity of 10 kWp. That is, each module has a power of 37 Wp. The panels were manufactured by the Swiss company Solarex and have an efficiency of about 10%.

Construction of the farm

The Ticino Solare 10 installation was built by scientists from the Swiss Scuola Universitaria Professionale della Svizzera Italiana (SUPSI) on the roof of the building. The goal of the project was to explore the possibility of using solar energy to generate electricity. The Ticino Solare 10 solar system produces electricity that is used to power the SUPSI building.

Installation Ticino Solare 10 is still operating today and is still in good working order. In recent years, the university has made upgrades to the installation, which resulted in the replacement of some photovoltaic panels. The university also places great emphasis on keeping installations in proper working order. Regular maintenance and also cleaning of the panels positively affects its well-being.

The Ticino Solare 10 installation has become a symbol of the development of photovoltaic technology in Europe. Although it has been 40 years since its inception, it shows that solar energy is a reliable and sustainable source of energy. It continues to be an object of research and a source of pride for the University.
