Record power demand in Poland

Record power demand in Poland as of January 9, 2024. As a result of the freezing weather across Poland, a record 28,416 MW of domestic power demand was recorded. For now these are preliminary data so updates can be expected. The following were announced on their website PSE (Polskie Sieci Energetyczne). The previous maximum demand value was nearly 800 MW less, and was recorded in February 2021.

Is the power grid prepared for such a high demand for power?

As PSE stated in its announcement:

“The electricity system is operating stably today, and the transmission system operator has sufficient power reserve.

The on-going winter season naturally causes an increase in energy demand. Therefore, the operation of the entire network is significantly affected by weather conditions. The development of RES (Renewable Energy Sources) over the past few years has made it possible to secure adequate reserves.

The published announcement reads:

“Coal-fired and gas-fired power plants and combined heat and power plants operated at about 23 GW, and wind farms and photovoltaic installations at about 4.7 GW.”

At the same time, electricity imports were at 582 MW.

Energy rush hour

For tomorrow in the morning – around 8-9 and in the afternoon 17-18 it is recommended to save electricity. For information on when we should reduce our electricity consumption, visit www.energetycznykompas.pl

Power demand record – what are energy rush hours?

Thanks to the Energy Compass application we can learn about the so-called Energy Peak Hours, i.e. the hours when it is best to reduce the use of energy-consuming devices, and when the opposite is true. The application illustrates in a very clear way the analysis of the operation of the European power system. This system generates, based on an analysis of current weather conditions (i.e., sunshine, windiness), time of day and air temperature, power demand results. It is also worth noting at this point that failures of generation sources or transmission networks are important in the calculations.
