Don’t be dirty!

Washing and cleaning a photovoltaic installation means taking proper care of the optimal level of energy production and the absence of many malfunctions such as ”hot spots” or delamination.

Let’s juxtapose the construction of solar panels with their cleaning. Don’t be dirty!

Here are the basic elements of photovoltaic panel design:

  1. Photovoltaic cells: These are the main components of any panel, usually made of silicon. These cells are capable of converting sunlight into direct current through the photovoltaic phenomenon. Depending on the type, the panels may contain monocrystalline, polycrystalline or thin-film cells.
  2. Tempered glass: The outer layer of the panel that protects the photovoltaic cells from external factors such as rain, snow, hail, as well as from mechanical damage. The tempered glass is also designed to maximize the penetration of sunlight into the photovoltaic cells.
  3. Frame: Usually made of aluminum, the frame provides structural stability to the panel and facilitates its assembly and installation.
  4. Back Layer: Protects the panel from behind, providing insulation and weather protection.
  5. Wires and connectors: Enable safe transmission of the produced electricity to the inverter and further to the home electrical system.
  6. Junction box: This is usually located on the back of the panel and contains diodes and connectors that help manage energy production and flow.

Don’t be dirty! Impact of cleaning photovoltaic panels on energy production:

Cleaning photovoltaic panels has a direct impact on their efficiency and electricity production. Dirt, dust, leaves, bird droppings and other debris can block sunlight from reaching photovoltaic cells. This, in turn, directly translates into a reduction in their productivity. Even a thin layer of dirt can significantly reduce the effectiveness of the panels, in some cases by as much as 5-20%. Regular cleaning of the panels keeps them in optimal condition and maximizes electricity production.

The optimal cleaning frequency depends on a number of factors, including the location of the installation, the presence of contaminants in the air and the slope of the panels. In some cases, natural cleaning with rain may be sufficient, but in areas with high levels of air pollution or horizontal installations where dirt tends to accumulate more quickly, regular cleaning may be necessary to maintain full system efficiency.
