Transition to 100% renewable energy in Estonia

Estonia, a country with a developed energy infrastructure. This country is taking ambitious measures to accelerate the transition to 100% renewable electricity by 2030. The Estonian government, supported the draft proposal of the Minister of Economy and Infrastructure. Consequently, he plans to increase electricity production from RES. The transformation aims to meet growing energy demand while striving for sustainable national development.

High energy prices as motivation for action

The current high electricity prices in Estonia are a clear signal of insufficient generation capacity. A shortage of generating capacity and rising fossil fuel prices are putting consumers in a difficult position. Economy and Infrastructure Minister Riina Sikkut stresses that this problem requires an effective solution.

High electricity prices have prompted companies to make investment decisions to increase renewable electricity generation capacity. The Estonian government is actively supporting these processes, aiming for a rapid and seamless transition to green energy. As part of this goal, Estonia plans to hold tenders for the generation of additional power from RES. In addition, Estonia will also invest in the development of network infrastructure.

Renewable electricity tenders. Estonia wants to be 100% ‘green.

In recent years, Estonia has held a tender for renewable electricity generation. This allowed 540 GWh of electricity to be marketed from renewable sources. More tenders are planned for the next three years, in which the state intends to purchase 1.65 TWh of electricity from renewable sources.

The introduction of wind farm fees for local municipalities and those living in the surrounding area will contribute to the construction of new onshore and offshore wind farms. In addition, the state is allocating funds to expand network infrastructure. Naturally, to increase the readiness of electricity grids to connect new sources of electricity from renewable sources.

Planning process audits and project acceleration

The Estonian government has developed an action program to accelerate the development of renewable energy in the country. This program provides for audits of the planning process. Secondly, environmental impact assessment and permitting to speed up the implementation of renewable energy projects.

The completion of procedures for important cross-border projects is also an important part of the government’s efforts. The result is expected to be the creation of an integrated permit for offshore wind farms within three years. Estonia’s Hydrogen Valley is a project. This is a project to accelerate the comprehensive development of the hydrogen industry. And consequently, make Estonia the first country in the world to create a nationwide hydrogen valley.

Heading for climate neutrality and sustainability.Estonia wants to be 100% ‘green.

Estonia is aiming for climate neutrality by 2050, in line with European Union goals. But the country also has its own ambitions to move to 100% renewable energy by 2030.

As part of its efforts, Estonia is investing in the development of wind farms, photovoltaic farms and hydrogen technologies. Enefit Green, a subsidiary of Eesti Energia, is playing a key role in the process. In October 2023, Enefit Green produced 97 GWh of electricity from renewable sources, three times more than a year earlier.

Enefit Green – leader in renewable energy production

Enefit Green is a leader in renewable energy production in Estonia. Most notably, the wind farms contributed 81 GWh of electricity production. Of this, 44 GWh came from windmills in Estonia and the rest from windmills in Lithuania. Enefit Green has a total of 165 windmills.

The company is also active in Poland, where it is investing in photovoltaics. In July 2023, Enefit Green produced 64 GWh of electricity. Mainly thanks to wind farms in Estonia and Lithuania, as well as newly acquired solar power plants in Poland.

As part of its efforts, Enefit Green plans to develop 20 solar power plants in Poland. These power plants combined will be able to produce 26 MW of electricity. Estonia wants to be 100% ‘green.

Estonia is taking ambitious steps to accelerate the transition to 100% renewable energy. The Estonian government is investing in the development of wind farms, photovoltaic farms and hydrogen technologies. By tendering electricity from renewable sources, Estonia is boosting green energy production. Enefit Green plays a key role in renewable energy production in both Estonia and Poland. Estonia, aiming for climate neutrality, has ambitious goals related to sustainable development and the use of renewable energy sources.
