In July of this year, we received a notification from the owner of a photovoltaic installation, located on the roof of a production hall. The 48 kWp installation was installed in 2021 and has not yet been inspected since then. The owner reported that he was concerned about a decline in the plant’s performance.

Soon after receiving the order, we arrived on site. As the installation was located on the roof of a production hall with an area of about 10,000 sqm, our team used a roof hatch to get to the roof. We then inspected the sheathing: it was made of trapezoidal sheet metal and had a slope of about 20 degrees. Panels from the well-known manufacturer JinKo and Huawei inverter.
We began our review of the installation by assessing its visual condition. We noticed dirt accumulating in large amounts on the photovoltaic panels, but the modules themselves were not damaged. The mounting structure was stable and was not damaged, nor did we see signs of corrosion. We then carefully inspected the cables and any connectors. The inverter also worked properly. We performed current and voltage measurements to rule out any faults.
A reading of the operation of the entire system indicated a decline in production compared to last year.
Therefore, after analyzing the results of the measurements and assessing the visual condition of the installation, we determined that the reason for the decrease in the performance of the installation was dirt on the photovoltaic panels.
Recommendations
As the reason for the decline in the performance of the installation was the dirtiness of the solar panels, we recommended that the owner perform a cleaning of the panels. Solar panel cleaning should be carried out at least once a year to ensure proper operation of the installation. On the other hand, if the installation is located in an area prone to dirt, such as an active agricultural or industrial site, more frequent cleaning of photovoltaic modules is recommended.
