Solar power plants in cities – rooftop installation

dirty panels - installation on the roof

It would seem that photovoltaic farms are located in agricultural areas, away from the hustle and bustle of big cities, but this is misleading. We imagine that as far as the eye can see there are photovoltaic modules spread out in even rows over a huge area and all around other farmland or fallow land, possibly forests – nothing could be further from the truth!

This time, however, with our team we traveled to Lodz in the Lodz province – a city historically associated with industry, mainly textile. There are many production halls and industrial plants in this city. Therefore, technical opportunities are emerging to build solar power plants on their roofs. And it is on one such plant that there is a rooftop installation with a total capacity of 500 kWp. It was created nearly two years ago and has not been cleaned once since.

What can stain panels in the city?

Although this power plant, built to cover the company’s own needs, is located on the roof of the building this does not at all mean that dirt does not reach it!

So what makes the panels dirty? Bird droppings can be mentioned first, of course, but don’t forget that in cities and especially big cities, there is a phenomenon called smog. These are any pollutants coming out of the chimneys or exhaust pipes of cars floating in the air and settling – as you can easily guess also on the panels. For the most part, these are sticky deposits, to which, in turn, dust easily sticks. As a result, forming a tightly adherent layer to the surface of photovoltaic modules.

First, when we arrived at the job site, we planned how we would set up the equipment, and so we did. We then connected to a water source and electricity. Then we climbed to the roof via a ladder inside the building and a hatch to the roof. In front of us are panels in an east-west arrangement of JinKo Solar with a unit power of 375W. As you can easily count more than 1330 pieces. Our team had two operators connected to one device at a time. Thanks to such scheduling of the work, we finished the order after 10 hours and the panels were left cleaned and washed. The most difficult to remove were bird droppings, which, dried in the sun, adhered firmly to the glass. However, we gave it a go!
