What is the abbreviation?

Renewable energy sources (RES) have become increasingly popular in recent years. They are environmentally friendly and reduce emissions of harmful greenhouse gases. In this regard, it is worth taking a closer look at the various terms related to RES.

What is the abbreviation?

What is the abbreviation? – basics

RES – renewable energy sources

RES are energy sources that can be renewed in the short term, on a cycle of several to several decades. Therefore, RES include, among other things, energy:

  1. sunny
  2. wind
  3. water
  4. geothermal
  5. biomass

PPA – power purchase contract

A PPA, or power purchase agreement, is a contract between a RES generator and a RES consumer. The contract specifies the price of electricity, the amount of electricity that customers will receive, and the term of the contract.

cPPA – variable price power purchase contract

The cPPA, or variable price power purchase contract, is a contract similar to the PPA, but in this case the price of electricity is variable and depends on market prices.

nN – low-voltage network

The nN, or low-voltage network, is a power network with a voltage rating of 0.4 to 1 kV.

MV – medium voltage network

MV, or medium voltage network, is an electric power network with a voltage rating of 1 to 15 kV.

HV – high voltage network

The HV, or high voltage network, is a power grid with a voltage rating of 15 to 110 kV.

What is the abbreviation?

PV – photovoltaics

PV, or photovoltaics, is a technology for generating electricity from solar radiation.

URE – Energy Regulatory Office

The ERO, or Energy Regulatory Authority, is a state organizational unit that is responsible for regulating the electricity market.

EPC – engineering, procurement, construction

EPC, or engineering, procurement, construction, is a project delivery model in which the general contractor is responsible for all stages of project delivery, from project preparation to plant commissioning.

O&M – operation and maintenance

O&M, or operation and maintenance, are activities designed to ensure the proper operation of RES installations.

What is the abbreviation? – we explain further

OFF-GRID

Off-grid is a photovoltaic installation that is not connected to the power grid. So the electricity generated by the photovoltaic panels is stored in batteries and used on an ongoing basis. Off-grid installations are used in places where there is no access to the power grid, such as remote households.

ON-GRID

On-grid is a photovoltaic installation that we connect to the power grid. The electricity generated by the photovoltaic panels is transmitted to the grid and the prosumer is paid for it through a system of discounts or net-metering. On-grid plants are the most popular type of photovoltaic installations in Poland.

PROSUMENT

That is, an individual or entity that generates electricity from RES for its own use and at the same time injects it into the electricity grid. The prosumer can sell electricity to the grid, as well as take it from the grid in case of a shortage of energy produced by their own installations.

kWp

A kWp is a unit of measurement of the capacity of a photovoltaic installation. One kWp corresponds to the power generated by a photovoltaic installation of 1 square meter, under standard conditions (insolation of 1000 W/m2, temperature of 25°C).
