Photovoltaics in Poland – ETRI Report

Photovoltaics in Poland – Report ETRI 2023, published by the Institute of Renewable Energy (IEO), presents the state of development of the photovoltaic market in Poland at the end of 2022. The institute presented it in November 2023. Poland’s installed photovoltaic capacity exceeded 12 GW this year, the report says. Therefore, this represents a record increase of more than 4.7 GW of new capacity compared to 2021.

Prosumers’ share of the photovoltaic market

In 2022, prosumers will account for 74% of the PV market in Poland. So this year there are more than 3.4 million new prosumers, an increase of 120% over 2021. As a result, there are already more than 5.6 million prosumers in Poland.

Share of small and large installations

The market share of small photovoltaic installations (50-1000 kWp) was 21%. Because more than 1.1 GW of new small-scale capacity has arrived this year. Therefore, the share of large photovoltaic farms (above 1 MW) was 5%. This year, more than 0.4 GW of new large farm capacity has arrived.

Turnover in the photovoltaic market

The turnover of the photovoltaic market in Poland in 2022 was 20 billion PLN. So this is more than double the increase from 2021.

Photovoltaic market development forecasts

The IEO forecasts that Poland’s installed PV capacity will increase to 15 GW in 2023 and 18 GW in 2024. In contrast, the photovoltaic market in Poland will continue to grow rapidly in the coming years, reaching an installed capacity of 30 GW in 2025 and 50 GW in 2030.

Impact of photovoltaics on the Polish energy system

The development of the photovoltaic market in Poland has a significant impact on the Polish energy system. Why? That’s because photovoltaics contribute to increasing the share of renewable energy in electricity generation in Poland. In 2022, the share of photovoltaic energy in electricity generation in Poland was 5.4%.

Photovoltaics also contribute to reducing electricity imports to Poland. In 2022, Poland’s electricity imports amounted to 19.6 TWh. Photovoltaics helped reduce electricity imports by about 1.5 TWh, so more than 10 times.

Photovoltaics in Poland – ETRI Report – Development Prospects

The prospects for the development of the photovoltaic market in Poland are very favorable. Influences include:

  • Rising electricity prices,
  • Increasing environmental awareness of the public,
  • Development of photovoltaic technologies,
  • favorable regulations.

Photovoltaics are projected to be one of the fastest growing sectors of the Polish economy in the coming years.
