Checking a non-functioning photovoltaic installation

Checking a non-functioning photovoltaic installation located on the roof of a garage at a single-family house in Myszków in the Silesia.

The components that make up a photovoltaic installation have a specific warranty. Whether photovoltaic panels, inverter or design. On the other hand, the solar system that is supposed to lower our bills sometimes stops working. Of course, the first contact is to the company that installed the system. However, sometimes the company is no longer there or it is difficult to contact it.

It was with such a “set of problems” that a customer reported to us. “Photovoltaics is, worked and stopped working.” The installer does not answer the phone, emails sent to him do not live to see a response. That’s why the application went to Us.

Checking a non-functioning photovoltaic installation – where to start

In the first place, we needed information from the customer.

  • When was the installation installed?
  • What kind of photovoltaic panels were used?
  • What is the inverter like?
  • When did the customer notice the malfunction?
  • And, of course, what does the malfunction manifest itself as?

After gathering the answers, we scheduled our service technician for a inspection of the photovoltaic installation at the customer’s site.

Upon arrival, we began checking the system by visually inspecting the entire installation including checking the connections and cables connecting the panels to the inverter. As the installation was mounted on the garage roof and the inverter in the garage, we had no problems with accessibility. The modules, except for spot dirt (mostly bird droppings), were fine. The cables showed no cracks, abrasions or other types of damage. On the other hand, the inverter … did not work at all! The inverter is the heart of the installation, converting direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC). Alternating current, that is, the kind we have in household outlets. The inverter used at the customer’s site is HUAWEI, so coming from one of the world’s leading manufacturers. The warranty is provided for 5 years. Error code on the display: 2063.

The important thing is ventilation!

Although HUAWEI devices are designed to operate in a wide temperature range (-25°C to +60°C), the lack of adequate ventilation often causes the device to overheat. The inverter was installed in the garage, but in the garage the owner did not park the car but had a workshop. Especially in the winter he likes to tinker with wood, and as you know woodworking is accompanied by ubiquitous dust and dust. It effectively clogged the vents of the inverter, causing it to overheat. Ultimately, it almost led to the failure of the inverter. In time, however, the non-functioning photovoltaic installation sparked the customer’s interest. We cleaned the inverter, instructed the customer on the need for adequate ventilation in the room and, most importantly, suggested moving the workshop. Workshop or inverter…
